ABOUT ELLiE
Ellie Reis is a Mixed Media Maximalist Illustrator based in Los Angeles exploring the intersections of bold expressionism and everyday visuals.
Their practice is largely digital,
often including physical textures and handmade relief carvings, incorporating custom illustrations wherever possible. Ellie has been illustrating as long as they could hold a brush, working professionally for the last 7 years.
With a blossoming career in Visual Identity Design, Ellie’s diverse skills set comes into full play, allowing them to authentically represent a wide range of clients in unique and interesting visuals. Being well-versed in the Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop is practically a second language; especially in thanks to studying software coding with Craig Hickman, one of the founding contributors. The technical background is crucial in their illustrative practices, allowing them to code custom functions. Their deep understanding of programs also ensures each illustration, graphic, or video is produced to the highest standard.
In addition to Ellie’s digital knowledge, their hands-on experience in both their personal creative practice, as well as their experience at several first-rate print shops in Los Angeles provides professional insight of production on both ends. This once more feeds back into Ellie’s digital expertise, as their personal work focuses on bridging the gap between physical pieces of art into larger productions.
Ellie takes great pride in their work as their interests, projects, and practices feed into one another. Their career is fueled by passion for the arts, hunger to learn more, and a dedication
to providing their clients with a personified and adaptable creative strategy.
Ellie is always eager to make a new connection, and is best reached through email.
As someone physically small, I would often hold myself in contempt for it.
I've since learned that this feeling came from not just my stature, but from environmental factors - our culture tells us that we are small, only to sell us
back a variety of solutions.
I believe that by framing our own insignificance as a problem, we isolate ourselves from the legacy around us. Hyper-individualism is an
ironic plague in the melting-pot of 21st century American media culture.
By tapping back into the abundance of symbolism and history around us,
we regain the power to simultaneously ground ourselves and reflect on the status quo.
Through the visual contrast of mixed media techniques and sensory overload of a Maximalist approach, unconventional but storied spaces invite us to explore our own cultural connections. By creating, conversing, and comparing the stories we extract from these illustrations, we have the opportunity to
re-contextualize our own perceptions. My work is an exercise in feeling insignificant while embracing the comfort provided from the cultures around us.
Yes, we are small. Recognize it.
